Governor Gavin Newsom Signs AB 2174 into Law, Expanding Opportunities for California Craft Breweries
Sacramento, CA, Sept. 21, 2024 – Today marks a major breakthrough for the California craft beer industry as Governor Gavin Newsom signs Assembly Bill 2174 (Aguiar-Curry) into law, allowing beer manufacturers to sell their beer at both public and private events through the use of a Beer Caterer’s Permit.
Starting January 1, 2025, beer manufacturers holding a type 01 or 23 license will be able to apply for a Beer Caterer’s Permit to sell their beer for consumption at events held off their licensed premises, including street fairs, community gatherings, private parties, and civic events held anywhere in the state which have been approved by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). This permit allows the brewery to sell up to 124 gallons of beer at each event for a maximum of 36 events per calendar year.
“We commend Governor Gavin Newsom, Assembly Majority Leader Aguiar-Curry, and the Legislature for their unanimous approval of this important bill,” stated Lori Ajax, Executive Director of the California Craft Brewers Association (CCBA). “This legislation recognizes the essential role that craft brewers play in California’s hospitality industry, highlighting their value as small businesses and contributors to their local communities.”
AB 2174 is an important milestone in supporting small businesses in the industry with growth opportunities that can strengthen the ties between independent craft breweries and their communities.
