First ever San Diego Beer Week coming soon
Home to more than 33 brew houses, San Diego is fast becoming one of the country’s premier craft beer destinations. With so much good beer flowing, it’s time for San Diego to host its own Beer Week. Running from November 6th through the 15th, San Diego Beer Week is a ten-day celebration of San Diego’s thriving brewing culture, inspiring people to drink local craft beer.
“We have amazing brewing talent in this city and we’ve had people asking us why we don’t have a Beer Week of our own,” says Colby Chandler, San Diego Brewer’s Guild President and founding member of San Diego Beer Week, “We’re looking forward to exposing a lot of new people to craft beer.”
In addition to promoting local craft beer, San Diego Beer Week will also be promoting the craft beer industry as a whole, with several prominent breweries from across the country participating in the festivities.
San Diego Beer Week is based on a model successfully implemented by many other cities, including Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, and New York. For ten days the city of San Diego’s bars, restaurants, and hotels will be teaming up with local and regional craft breweries to host a wide variety of events, including beer and cheese tastings, “Meet The Brewers” nights, homebrewing classes, and brewery tours.
Beer Week will kick off with the San Diego Brewer’s Guild’s Beer Festival, where more than 80 beers brewed in San Diego County will be poured, and local restaurants will serve small bites to pair with select beers. Other highlights of the week include: Green Flash Brewing’s 7th Anniversary Party; a class on beer and cooking hosted by Karl Strauss and Great News Cooking School; Liars’ Club Redux at Hamilton’s Tavern, who is also hosting a “Disc Golf With The Brewers” event; and Russian River Brewing Night at Toronado. In addition, a number of San Diego breweries will be producing special, one-off releases for Beer Week.
“Not only will San Diego Beer Week promote craft beer,” said Chandler, “We’re hoping it will boost our local economy.” To that end, San Diego Beer Week has partenered with several San Diego hotels who are offering special room rates, inluding the Town & Country in Mission Valley, and Hotel Solamar located in the heart of San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp Quarter.
“There are a lot of people willing to travel for great beer,” Chandler said, “And we hope to bring in a good crowd over these ten days.”
San Diego Beer Week takes place from Friday, November 6th through Sunday, November 15th, 2009. Events will be hosted countywide, with new events posted frequently on the official San Diego Beer Week website.
